Wyrley Juniors FC – voted Top Club in England!! The Club picked up the highest award at a lunch at Wembley Stadium. The full story follows…

The Club was delighted recently to receive Staffordshire FA Charter Standard Community Club of the Year 2011 for the fourth time in 8 years and even more so when it was also voted the Regional winners for the second time in 6 years.
These awards were put into the shade when the club heard that it was the National Community Club of the Year for its work in the following areas: -

•supporting Staffordshire FA’s diversity objectives by creating a Veterans team and Under 8 girls teams
•after 11 years of much effort, raising £1.15m to build it’s own clubhouse, which will be finished at the end of the month
•volunteering free coaching to the local Community Police to keep youths off the streets
•providing free schools coaching
•its two academies for boys and girls aged 4 to 9 having over 70 players registered
•becoming a Deaf Friendly Club – one of only 100 nationally
•continual development of it’s coaches
•the quality of its annual tournament for 170 teams and much more

Keith Hardy, Chairman of the Club, picked up the award on behalf of the Club at a lunch hosted by Sir Geoff Hurst and Sir Trevor Brooking before the Manchester United v Manchester City Community Shield match at Wembley. He is pictured below receiving the award from Ian Rush, ex Liverpool and Wales. He then went onto the pitch at half time with other award category winners to be introduced to the crowd. During the game, Wyrley Juniors FC name was flashed round the ground on pitch side advertising hoardings. Keith said ‘The Club is delighted to receive the highest award possible for any junior club and this is recognition for over 100 volunteers and 50 coaches involved with the club’. He added ‘ The club is going through a remarkable period, with our own ground weeks away from completion and receiving recognition at the highest level. For me, to walk on the Wembley turf with a national hero in Sir Geoff Hurst was an experience never to be forgotten.’ Shaun Ponder, Vice Chairman, who also attended the luncheon said ‘this is remarkable recognition for not just the club and its coaches and players but for the local area.’
Wyrley sent over 30 committee members and managers to the game – pictured below sporting their Wyrley scarfes before the game.
Keith Hardy finished by saying ‘the Club is 30 years old this coming season and with our own base we now intend to kick on again in providing excellent facilities to local footballers.’

Anyone wishing to join us should contact Keith on 07836202764.’

Wyrley Colts continued their latest winnig streak of awards thanks to Assistant Manager Jason Brimfield.

Jason was awarded the prestigious Haven Hero Community Award by The Haven Refuge – the Wolverhampton-based domestic violence charity which provides support and care for women and children who have suffered domestic violence. Jason was blissflully unaware of his award until he arrived at last night’s ceremony in Wolverhampton attended by Lord Bilston – Dennis Turner and he was presented his award by Emma Reynolds – Member of Parliament for Wolverhampton.

The Haven have been searching for it’s first ever positive male role model and was nominated by The All New Wyrley Colts U11′s players and Team Manager, Scott Lyons. The Haven received countless nominations for police officers, firefighters, solicitors and even a radio DJ, but his voluntary commitment to children in football, especially his one to one care with those who have experienced personal problems, drew a unanimous verdict from a panel of dignitaries, Haven board members and Haven service users who heard of Jason’s relentless energy and selfless commitment to his young team.

The team recorded an emotional video which was shown to the audience and saw testimonies from players in their own words, along with a tearjerking message from his sons Connor and Kielan, both Wyrley Juniors players.

Congratulations to Jason for his award and his commitment to his team – Wyrley Colts are very proud of you!

Wyrley Juniors FC have been awarded FA Charter Standard Community Club of the Year 2011 NATIONALLY by the FA!

The Club picked up the County and Regional awards at an awards ceremony before the Walsall FC v Wolves game at Banks’s Stadium last night and was also then delighted to hear that it was the National winner.

To get Community Club status in itself is a challenge and to receive County recognition is an honour (we were also County winners in 2004, 2006 and 2009) as there are 15 Community Clubs in Staffordshire. To be a Community Club you have to have 10 teams, a girls section, adults teams, development plan and all FA policies in place. To get Regional recognition is rare – we were also Regional winners in 2009 (in additional to Staffordshire, the Region is made up of Worcestershire, Herefordshire, Shropshire and Birmingham FAs and you can only guess at the number of clubs in that huge area). BUT to get NATIONAL recognition has exceeded all our expectations!

We are told that some of the reasons for our nomination are as follows: -

- working with Police to deliver free coaching
- supporting Staffs FA diversity initiatives with U8 girls and Veterans
- goalkeeping centre
- Long Lane Development
- support for Young Leaders and coaches
- support for Staffs FA on committees and workshops
- the quality and size of our annual tournament (interestlingly another winning club commented very favourably about our tournament and will be returning next year)
- and the list goes on!

Every one involved in giving up their time volunteering for the Club should be very proud of this award – it is indeed a ‘one-off’ and rare acheivement – WELL DONE EVERYONE!

The National award will be presented to us at a luncheon before the Community Shield game between Manchester United and Manchester City on August 7th in the FA Club Room at Wembley, where we will be rubbing shoulders with other National winners in 6 other categories and footballing icons such as Sir Geoff Hurst and Sir Trevor Brooking.

Watch this space for photos taken from that event!
