The two teams playing today, are the two teams battling for 2nd place in the league, and this the last game of the season. With all of this in mind the game promised to be a memorable occasion. Wyrley started brightly and were denied the opening goal by some outstanding keeping and defending by Bedworth. Unfortunately it was Bedworth who scored first with a rocket of a shot that Lauren got her hands too but only managed to treat it like a hot potato and unfortunately it ended in the net 0-1. Wyrley then had to endure sustained pressure as Bedworth sought out a second. Brave defending from Kirsty, Jody, Ash and Leah and some brilliant goalkeeping from Lauren ensured the score didn’t increase. Leanne, Hayley, Tash and Emily were instrumental in holding the midfield and covering the defence when required. Sophie and Jemma were worked hard by the defenders from Bedworth who were playing a very high line.

Wyrley went out strong in the 2nd half, with the advantage of the wind at their backs Wyrley were straight on the attack. Some lovely passing moves, by both teams resulting in a good game for the spectators. 50 mins A great burst down the wing by Leanne, who sent over a sublime cross which Jemma rose to meet and nod past the keeper 1-1 game on. With the draw ok for Wyrley but the win required by Bedworth, neither team took their foot off the gas. Sophie latched onto a lovely ball and smashed it home but was adjudged offside, strange decision as she came from her own half. Both sides were all out for the win the longer the game went on with some crunching tackles being made and both teams at times with 11 behind the ball, so they didn’t concede. 80 mins Wyrley made the move of the game Sophie passed to Leanne who sent over a perfect cross for Jemma to smash into the crossbar, Leanne was the first to react and bury the loose ball 2-1. A relieved Wyrley then mainly played keep ball to ensure all 3 points and 2nd spot in the league. Chelsea and Cath were unused subs.

Well played Ladies, it’s been a hard fought season. Its been plagued by injuries, but the fight and determination showed today, to come from behind and take all 3 points is immeasurable. Very, very proud of each and every one of you.

Hope to see you all again next season, but for those of you off to university we wish you well and hope you achieve your own personnel goals.

Wyrley had the luxury of a substitute for the visit of Kidsgrove knowing they needed to pick up the points to hold on to 2nd place in the league. Lauren was back in goal, with the defence of Jody, Kirsty, Kelly W and Ash holding the line well. Tash, Leanne, Sam and Chelsea were a battling midfield with Sophie and Jemma chasing the goals. It took 20 mins for Wyrley to break down the Kidgrove defence with Sophie latching onto the ball with a half volley from outside the box leaving the keeper no chance 1-0. The rest of the game was Lauren making some cracking saves, Tash making some crunching tackles, and everybody trying to break down the opposition. Jemma was unlucky to be ruled offside when her shot went in. Shelly replaced Ash and tried hard to make a telling cross count but Kidgrove were not lying down and battled well to try and get the elusive equaliser. It was another hard fought game at the end of a very long season for most of these girls, but the points ended up with Wyrley.

Nearly there girls only 2 games to go.

Well Wyrley made the long trek to Whitchurch to play Prees Raiders with a compliment of 10 players with Jemma making a mad dash to get there ASAP to make 11. Not the usual starting line up for Wyrley with Nia being brought in to cover for Lauren, who was covering for Hayley T. A makeshift defence consisting of Jody, Kirsty Leah and Lauren. A modified midfield of Leanne, Chelsea, Sam and Emily, with Sophie playing as lone striker till Jemma arrived. A tight game with both teams probing for the opener which came via a cracking shot which eluded Nia 1-0. Wyrley chased the game and were rewarded with Jemma hitting an absolute cracking volley from outside the box which smashed into the back bar of the goal and flew back out that fast that we were left wondering for a second or to if it was in 1-1. The teams were both looking for another goal when Leanne managed to lob the keeper whilst having her back to the goal, absolutely amazing 1-2.

The second half was attack and defend for both teams, Wyrley having the harder time facing the wind and kicking up the slope. Lauren was not out of place out of goal and battled well, Sam settled back into the side easily. Kirsty was warned about her behaviour when she was fouled but stayed on her feet and screamed as she chased the loose ball. The ref gave a free kick against her for running at the opposition screaming to scare them, new rule on me. Prees had several chances to equalise but Nia covered her box well. The game was a tense affair and nobody was more relieved when the final whistle went than the Wyrley players and supporters.

With the 20c sun beating down and a gusty wind the 10 girls of Wyrley travelled to Bedworth, hoping to not concede 2nd spot in the league. For the first 10 mins it was wave after wave of Wyrley attack, keeping Bedworth penned in their own half. 11 mins Emily’s sweet corner was bundled over the line after hitting Chelsea 0-1. 14 mins Leanne collected a lovely pass, danced around the defence and slotted home 0-2. This was either a sign to take their foot of the gas or Bedworth to realise Wyrley only had 10 players and should up their game. 17 mins Bedworth struck the ball which hit Ash on the arm, (which was by her side) and awarded Bedworth a penalty. Lauren stood her ground and made herself as tall as she could, the strike was a good one but Laurens double save was even better. 25 mins more defending for Wyrley but the ball was only cleared to the edge of the box, and the Bedworth striker sent in a screamer of a shot which eluded Lauren 1-2. Jemma went in 50/50 and came out with stud marks across her knee and was unable to carry on for the rest of the half. If life was difficult before it just became even harder. Bedworth kept Wyrley camped in their own half and it was backs to the wall defending. Any player that made it into the Bedworth half was deemed offside by the enthusiastic linesman.

Second half started with Bedworth seeking out the equaliser leaving Jody, Ash, Kelly and Tash working hard to keep to the goal intact. Chelsea, Leanne, Vikki and Emily were spending more time helping the defence than building play out of the half. Jemma came back on to the field to attempt to chase down any ball making it over the half way line. 52 mins miscommunication between Kelly and Lauren resulted in the ball in the back of the net 2-2. 65 mins Bedworth once again managed to wear down the weary legs of Wyrley and for the first time in the game take the lead 3-2. Would this be the catalyst for Bedworth to stretch the lead? Wyrley dug deep and refused to lie down and be beaten and valiantly giving 110%. Jemma, Tash and Vikki were all unlucky not to get the elusive equaliser, that was when they could actually get into the Bedworth half without the linesman’s spring loaded flag shooting up. It was on 89 mins when Jemma made the run from her own half and was clear to slot it past the keeper 3-3. The biggest cheer was from Martin who jumped up and roared the ball over the line.

This has to be one of the bravest performances from 10 players this season, Martin is so proud of you all for not giving up and giving everything plus some. Jody says well done to all of you. Andy is proud of you all also.

Wyrley turned out for this league game with a great run of form behind them. Unfortunately Bridgnorth came with a different team that had lost 9-1 to Wyrley, a few weeks ago. Wyrley started brightly but Bridgnorth’s keeper seemed to have psychic ability in reading Wyrley’s crosses and shots. Sophie, Jemma, Tash and Hayley were finding life difficult in any attempt on goal. Bridgnorth’s defence and midfield were camped well in their own half and blocked any ball that was fired into their box. It was totally against the run of play on 16 mins when Bridgnorth broke with a long ball from the keeper that wasn’t dealt with and smashed home past a helpless Lauren 0-1. Lauren was called into action a few minutes later and made a terrific save denying Bridgnorth a second. Bridgnorth played a high line for the rest of the half, leaving Wyrley trying to beat the off side flag of the Bridgnorth Linesman, not an easy task, in fact it was impossible. 29 mins Bridgnorth scored their 2nd with another well taken strike 0-2.

The 2nd half was a re-run of the 1st, with Emily, Shelly, Tash and Hayley unable to find a way to feed the ball through to Sophie and Jemma. Jody, Kelly, Cath and Ash were run ragged by the imposing strikers. Leanne came on for Shelly and Kirsty replaced Kelly. 60 mins Bridgnorth got their 3rd with rocket of a shot that was under the diving Lauren before she knew it 0-3. Sophie was clear through on goal, managed to round the keeper and with the open net ahead was brought down by the defender from behind. A penalty was awarded and a yellow card shown, as apparently it wasn’t a goal scoring opportunity!!!!. The psychic keeper dived the right way and pushed it behind for a corner. Legs, bodies and even the posts kept Wyrley’s shots out today, a real bad day at the office.

On a glorious Sunday Afternoon, Wyrley set off up the M6 to Kidsgrove, to the team who knocked them out of last year’s Staffs Cup in the semi final stage. Wyrley started brightly enough passing the ball and probing the Kidsgrove defence. 17 mins Hayley sent over a super cross from the right and after a bit of ping pong round the box Leanne smashed it home 0-1. Kidsgrove went straight on to the attack and a truly magnificent diving save from Lauren, tipping the ball away for a corner, from a long range dipping shot kept Wyrley ahead. Lauren was once again the saviour a few minutes later commanding her box well and saving at the feet of the on rushing forward. Two excellent saves Lauren. 31 mins Leanne made a surging run up the left wing, and cut a beauty of a cross for Sophie to connect with and make it 0-2. 35 mins Depending on which version you believe, it was either a testing cross from Hayley which the keeper only managed to palm into her net, or Hayley smashed it from the right lobbing the keeper for a 0-3 lead. The rest of the half was an evenly matched battle across the pitch. Jody, Kelly W, Ash and Cath defended with a high line and dealt with the runners well. Tash, Leanne, Emily and Hayley worked well in midfield and kept Sophie and Jemma busy with some lovely passes to run on to.
With the temperature nearing 20*c the heat was going to play its part in the 2nd half, with both sides finding it difficult to chase the long balls and settling for a game mainly played in the middle of the pitch. Shelly came on for Emily and Leah replaced Hayley. Leah battled well against a stronger opponent and used her size well to come away with the ball on several occasions. 75 mins Wyrley were caught napping and left 1 on 1 with Lauren, who was helpless to keep out the cracking shot 1-3. This gave Kidsgrove the momentum and came close to securing a second, only to be thwarted by the post. This jump started Wyrley and once again started to pass and build. Kidsgrove battled and continued to seek out a 2nd goal. 90 mins when Ash curled in a sublime cross for Sophie to stick a leg out at and turn into the net 1-4. A hard game given the heat, but Wyrley continue a fine run of 5 wins in the league and 2nd place in the table.
Well done girls keep up the great work, we are all really pleased with the results and work rate this season.

On a warm sunny afternoon, we host near neighbours Reedswood. Good local derby hopefully with all the thrills these occasions are renowned for. The 1st 9 mins are full of testing runs at each other’s defences. I0 mins Ash made a great run down the wing sending over a great ball to Jemma, who laid it off for Sophie to smash home 1-0. Reedswood were straight on the attack and seeking to level up the score, it didn’t take long. 12 mins a mix up in defence left Lauren stranded and an easy goal for the equalizer. When Wyrley play the ball to feet they look amazing, the control and passing is a joy to watch. When they resort to hit n hoof football not so much. Jody, Cath, Kelly and Leah were all having a solid game in defence clearing and tackling leaving Reedswood to take long range shots which Lauren handled mainly pretty well. 30 mins Wyrley had a free kick which the keeper tipped over the bar, the resulting corner from Emily was cleared but only as far as Tash who unleashed an unstoppable shot 2-1. Now the weather started to take a turn for the worse, first a little rain well it is April, then more rain more than an April shower then, then hail. As the hail stones started to get bigger the ref blew for half-time, I can safely say it was the quickest I’ve seen some people move in a long time.

As the storm passed and the sun once more started to shine the 2nd half got underway. Reedswood started the brighter and soon had the equaliser. 47 mins a long range shot which Lauren seemed to have her eye on took a nasty bounce and ended up over her head and into the net. Bad luck Lauren 2-2. Emily, Tash, Ash and Leanne were masterful in midfield holding their own against a solid Reedswood team. Jemma and Sophie chased and harried the Reedswood defence hoping they would make a mistake. 60 mins Wyrley had a free kick outside the box, Tash struck the ball and Leanne got a glancing header past the keeper 3-2. 75 mins Reedswood were once again looking for the equaliser when the ball was sent over the top and Jemma beat the outrunning keeper with a sublime lob 4-2. Jemma and Cath made way for Hayley and Kirsty. Kirsty was called upon to make several great challenges to deny the Reedswood forwards goal scoring opportunities.

Nice win ladies, nice game to watch on the whole. Keep up the good work.
