Match Report:- Wyrley Juniors United U14’s Season 2014-15

League Division 1

Chasetown Colts 0  v Wyrley Junior s United 1.

United started brightly, but conditions for both teams weren’t the best, a gusting diagonal wind, giving a big advantage to the team playing with the wind at their backs. United took a little while to adjust to the conditions, the final ball with the wind assisting was not at all easy to execute. Chasetown with the wind, rain and occasional hail in their faces found it hard to pierce the United defence, Tom Rowlands, Callum Holliday, Todd Clifton and United man of the match Sam Cotterell kept things tight at the back. United played some good passing football in patches but in difficult conditions and with the pitch getting progressively heavier, a more direct approach was probably the best way to play. The best move of the game however proved to decide the outcome of the match, Tom Wheeldon pick the ball up just in the opponents halve, he slipped past one defender and hit a firm pass into Callum Ward, Ward turned, picked his head up and hit a perfect pass inside the Colts defence for Wheeldon to run onto, with plenty still to do, Wheeldon saw the keeper advancing and chipped the ball neatly into the empty net. The half time whistle sounded not long after this strike.

The second half saw the Colts throw the kitchen sink at United, United were reduced to the occasional break, United changed things slightly and Jack Craddock and Alex Price added some freshness to a few tired United legs. Colts threw players forward and could have levelled but for some defensive heroics from Price on the United goal line. United had a couple of opportunities to seal the game with a few minutes left, Wheeldon was unlucky not to convert but for a desperate last gasp Colts challenge, and Wheeldon also fed Ward whose shot couldn’t quite fine the target.
