Last night the U14s played an 11-a-side friendly against Walsall Ladies and adapted very well to give an excellent performance – despite us still playing 9-a-side football in the Burton League.

The result could possibly have been more emphatic with the woodwork twice and several good saves from the goalkeeper keeping the score down. But ultimately we were pleased to come away with the win as Walsall certainly kept our defence on their toes with some lively attacking play.

Keira Turner and Hollie Hinsley hit the goals for Wyrley.

It was a good run out for both teams prior to the season opener on Saturday and the game was certainly enjoyable to watch. Well done girls and thanks to Walsall for inviting us to play!

Bet there’s a few aching legs out there today

With only a few days to go to the new season the new look Jags have come through pre season with flying colours!

With a new management team along with the signings of several new players optimism is high for greater achievement in 2010/11. New editions to the squad include Max Goodier from Burntwood Dragons, a big ‘old fashioned’ centre forward who bullies defenders in pursuit of goals and has a vicious left foot shot, Max has fitted in well with the existing players and has already scored several times in pre season! Josh Hill has returned to the fold after a spell at Chase Athletic and will form a dangerous partnership ‘up front’ with Max, Josh has also scored in pre season and has showed signs of outstanding skill. Nicholas Adams joins to bolster the defensive department, a strong left footer with serious tackling ability has no previous team experience but is a fast learner and has already shown signs of becoming a real find for the future, brave in the air and on the ground Nick never backs out of a challenge! The Jags are entering their 5th season together and with the mentioned additions along with Captain and defensive rock Euan Aston, Billy Hammond, Ollie Cooper, Ricky Harrison, Josh Price, Brandon Garrett and hot of the press newly signed Charlie Machin from Burntwood Dragons… the future looks bright!!!

Everyone involved with the Jags would like to thank Keith, Candy and Shaun for their help over the summer in taking the team forward, best wishes to all Wyrley teams in 2010/11

Well, almost! Wyrley Colts started their new season in the Bilston Partnership Youth Football League with two excellent wins, following a fantastic 5-2 midweek friendly win over Willenhall Colts.

Wyrley Colts 5 - 0 Springvale Cougars

The Colts played a superb passing game, with a solid midfield and marksman-like shooting from both strikers, with excellent counter attacks by our defence. Shots on target were flying in thick and fast, and the scoreline should have been 10 or 12 goals had it not been for some excellent goalkeeping from Springvale.

Wyrley Colts 4 – 2 Wednesfield Lions

Fierce rivalry ensued throughout this match with Colts playing their old club, Wednesfield. The match was fircely contested, with every single Colts player giving 200%. With the match drawn 2-2 at half time, the Colts came out like men possessed and played some of the finest football ever, pin-point accurate passing, some good old-fashioned tackling and a will to win it for Wyrley.

Words cannot describe how proud we are of our team, who played their football firm and fair.

Congratulations Colts, here’s to the next 39 weeks of the football calendar!

First match of the season and a win for the home team. After 2 different displays over the last 2 weeks in friendlies, an 8-0 defeat and a 5-1 win, Wyrley’s supporters wondered which team would emerge.

Wyrley started well and had the majority of play 5 mins, Sophie managed to scoop over from 5 yards out. 10 min Camped in the opposition half, it was against the run of play, Prees caught out Wyrley’s defence on the break and scored past a helpless Lauren. Wyrley continued to press looking for the equaliser. Leanne shot wide, Sophie headed over, Kelly I managed to find the keeper. It looked like one of those days when Wyrley would do everything right except hit the target. The shot ratio was 10 to Wyrley and 1 to Prees at half time.

2nd half started in exactly the same way, when on 53 mins Sophie battled well in the box, turned and slotted the ball home 1-1. 54 mins Leanne came in from the wing and smashed the ball home 2-1. Was this the sign that they would start scoring? 65 mins Tash takes a free kick 2 yards outside the box, clears the 4 woman wall and dips in the net 3-1. This was the sign for Wyrley to sit back and take a breather. Lauren was not unduly troubled and was safe hands when required. Defenders Jody, Kirsty, Cath and Ash were put under pressure and Jody was unfortunate to concede a penalty. Prees scored a nice penalty 3-2 and with the wind in their favour Prees continued to press for an equalizer. Midfield Kelly H, Kelly I, Emily, and Tash were worked hard and pulled out of position on several occasions, Sophie and Leanne battled and chased down everything that came over the top. Kelly I made way for Jemma, who was unlucky not to score and Kelly H made way for Shelly who battled well on the wing.

All in all not a bad game of football, some nice passing movements and some excellent individual pieces of skill. More of the same next week at home to Bridgnorth Spartans in the 1st round of the cup.

Despite only have 11 players available, Wyrley produced a tremendous performance in their first run out of the season.
Their passing in the first half was a joy to behold and the more experienced Port Vale team could not live with them.
Goals came at regular intervals with Emily Quimby cracking home two 25 yarders including one that almost needed goal line technology! Laura Cumberledge scored two well taken efforts and worked hard all game. Sophie Shorrock claimed two goals but missed an easier open goal after beating two defenders and the keeper. Shorrock combined well all game with Jemma Clews and with their pace, clever movement and dribbling skills you would have thought they had played together for many seasons not the first time in 4 years!
Clews had some early bad luck and seemed to hit the keeper or an outstretched leg with numerous efforts before finally hitting home low from the edge of the box. The sixth goal was the goal of the game when at least 10 successive two touch passes led to Clews hitting home. Clews hit another into the top corner to complete the scoring.
Special mention to Rachel Hall who played at centre half through a lack of defenders but showed great confidence, strength and considerable pace and you’d have thought she had played there forever! Alongside her was Cath Davis who was excellent in everything she did, winning every header and confidently moving out of defence. Saff Hicken played right full back and she always looked to be an outlet from Nia Jay in goal, distributing very well. Nia had two collapsing saves to make all game and dealt with them comfortably.
Leah Fanning mopped up everything down the left and moved forward at every opportunity to support Hayley Turner, who was a constant threat with her pace and running with the ball. Beth Crook again provided the glue in midfield doing everything simply but very well.

A great performance girls! Well done!
