AFC Cannock Town Boys 0 – 9 Wyrley Lions

Another brilliant display by the Lions.  AFC Cannock Town Boys played well, but Lions controlled the game really from start to finish.  The first goal came 13 minutes into the first half with Brandon firing an excellent ball into the net.  Martin was next with his first goal of the season.  Shy fought well in midfield and got his name on the score sheet with 4 minutes left of the first half, with Jim making it 4 for Lions seconds before half time.

Jim had some great runs through the middle of the pitch, hitting the post a few times when Lions put pressure on Cannock Town Boys.  Liam J also hit the post a few times in the first half.  Alex worked really well throughout the match, playing some good balls forward for the strikers to apply the pressure.  Sean had very little to do in the first half with no threatening shots on goal from Cannock Town Boys, and with Luke D, Jack and Roberto being solid in defence, then Fraser and Alex just in front, it was difficult for Cannock Town Boys to make an impression.

Lions began the second half with the same determination causing Cannock Town Boys to give away an own goal within 2 minutes of the start with a goalmouth scramble.  Shy burst through midfield again, getting his second and Lions 6th with another powerful shot.  Liam J took an injury with the ball winding him from a strong clearance from Cannock Town Boys, so Lions re-structured with 10 men until Liam J returned to the field.  Cannock Town Boys did break away a few times, putting a little more pressure on Lions at the back, almost scoring when they got through the defence, bet Sean in goal, but then Luke D cleared the ball off the line putting it out for a throw in.  Lions, still wanting more goals, never gave up, and it wasn’t long before Liam J scored an excellent goal making it 7 nil.  5 minutes later, Lions were awarded a penalty, which Jim gladly stepped up to take.  Cannock Town Boys goalkeeper saved the penalty but couldn’t stop Jim slamming in the rebound to make it 8 nil.  2 minutes from time, with another excellent run at goal from Brandon, Cannock Town Boys could only watch as Brandon made it 9 nil.

Liam, Jim and Brandon played really well together up front, creating chances for themselves and eachother.  Lions midfield, Shy, Martin, Fraser and Alex did some good battling to win balls and move forward, and the defence with Luke D, Jack and Roberto covering eachother to work with Sean in goal to ensure a clean sheet.

With 2 players away ill, so Lions had no subs, it was excellent performance all round.  Lions are definately putting their training skills into the matches, so keep up the good work boys and we will continue to get stronger.

John, Phil, Chris and the parents are really proud of how hard you’re all working, and it was another difficult decision for man of the match.  The parents voted, and the man of the match medal was awarded to Brandon.  Well done Brandon !

Well done Lions !
