Wyrley Juniors 3  Penncroft 2

Wyrley entertained 1st division Penncroft in the first round of the Presidents cup on Saturday and came up with a very good performance. With quite a high wind in their faces Wyrley expected hard work in the first half but despite Penncroft having a lot of ball and looking pretty when going forward they never created a single clear cut chance, however once Wyrley settled we gradually began to trouble the visitors. When Lowe was put through on the ‘keeper a rather tame shot was well saved, but he really should have opened the scoring. Good pressure and build up play continued and the reward duly came. A fine through ball was picked up by Geldart and although the defender forced him wide a great left foot shot was despatched into the corner of the net to give Wyrley a deserved half time lead.

The second half saw an even better display, the visitors were really under the cosh and when Lowe had his second one on one with the keeper he danced round him only to see his goalbound shot tremendously stopped on the line. As is usual in football every team has a 20 minute spell of ascendency and sure enough with Wyrley under pressure a melee in the goalmouth saw Penncroft equalise. This did not deter us and Charles ought to have restored the lead when after a fine run, faced up to the ‘keeper but shot for the near post instead of across him. With time running out Dolman picked up the ball and jinked into the box in that way he does a lovely shot looked to have won the game but unfortunately hit the post and came out. Minutes later the same player made amends with a lovely finish which had surely won it. This game was not finished though and almost from the restart Penncroft were awarded a free kick on the halfway line. A speculative centre cum cross was picked up by the wind and just beat the superb Holliday drifting narrowly under the bar. Penncroft had 2 shots two goals and extra time was summoned.

Wyrley were tiring against a side who play a division higher but a couple of changes instilled new confidence, things were pretty scrappy in extra time and neither side produced anything very clear cut. With the game looking as though penalties would be needed a long throw from Martin was headed on by Geldart and despite appeals for pushing on the goalie a Penncroft defender under pressure headed the ball into his own net. It was bitter for Penncroft to lose to an own goal but they never looked like winning the game and so Wyrley go into the second round,
