Ladies Challenge Cup Quarter Final Wyrley Ladies v Bradwell Belles

A wet Sunday afternoon, 11 players, playing a team from a higher division who were last year’s beaten finalist, was Wyrley’s cup run going to end at the quarter final stage again?  The answer was an emphatic NO.

Wyrley started the strongest and pressed Bradwell back in their own half, it took 8 mins for the deadlock to be broken.  A nice running and passing move, the shot was parried and fell to Hayley T, she hit it with lightening pace into the bottom right hand corner 1-0 what and unbelievable start.  Wyrley doubled their lead on 12 mins with Sophie riding the challenge of the keeper and neatly slotting the ball into the empty net 2-0.  Bradwell hit back and nearly got on the score sheet but were thwarted by a goal line clearance from Jody.  This game was end to end and both keepers and defences were tested.  Ash, Jody, Kirsty and Cath soaked up the pressure and made some outstanding tackles to deny Bradwell.  21 mins Emily sent over a pinpoint cross for Jemma to chase and slot past the keeper 3-0.  Leanne, Tash, Emily and Hayley T played a versatile midfield that was quick to defend and pushed up for each attack.  Hayley was again the victim of being too quick when she found herself sandwiched between two Bradwell players that left her slightly concussed, leaving Wyrley to play out the last 5 till half time with 10 players.  Half time Wyrley were cruising and playing one of the best games I have seen them play for a while.

2nd half saw Bradwell make their first change, the goalkeeper was changed and Wyrley were left wondering how this was going to affect the game, as it didn’t seem a very attacking move.  Wyrley on the other hand started with 10 as Hayley was still recovering from the bang on the head.  The goalkeeper soon showed Wyrley what she had when she gathered the ball from a Wyrley attack and kicked it to the edge of the Wyrley box for the forwards to battle Wyrley’s defence over.  Wyrley passed and built up wave after wave of attacking football, only to have Bradwell’s keeper scoop up the ball and hammer it back down the field.  Sophie and Jemma were chasing down the ball and eventually Bradwell started to get sloppy.  57 mins Jemma carried the ball into Bradwell’s half and kept on going, managing to send the ball goal wards before the keeper took it from her feet, and saw it trickle over the line 4-0.  You would think with 30 mins left, no subs, a wet, muddy, draining pitch, it would be Wyrley begging for the final whistle, this was not the case as they continued to build and attack.  86 mins a harsh penalty was awarded for handball by the Bradwell defender.  Sophie placed the ball and struck it with such venom, sending the keeper the wrong way and nearly burst the net 5-0.  90 mins the last attack of the game saw the cross go behind Sophie to Jemma who smashed it causing Sophie to duck and the ball end up in the net for her hat trick and a final score of 6-0.

Ash, Jody and Tash all made their trademark crunching tackles, mostly getting the ball 1st.  Cath’s precision passes were appreciated by everyone.  Lauren controlled her box well and held onto the ball well.  Hayley ran herself into the ground, that’s when she wasn’t bundled into it.  Emily’s corners were a menace to Bradwell, along with her excellent distribution.  Kirsty popped up in the right place to make an important clearance more than once.  Leanne’s bursts down the wing had Bradwell chasing shadows.  Jemma ran at defenders and took her goals well.  Sophie stood tall and executed her penalty well.

Wyrley played their best game for a while today and those 11 players gave everything.  Take a bow girls you deserve it.

A comment from the Chairman of Bradwell Belles, and ex staffs f.a ladies committee chairman Rob Pilkington – Congratulations for today, your team were up for it more and played really well.  Well done & good luck in the semi’s.

A compliment you earned today girls.
