The eagerly anticipated league campaign got under way with a visit to a tough, well organised Sutton United. With several new players and a new formation to get used to the Jags were under pressure from the early stages, some fine saves from Josh Price kept the Jags in the tie until mid way through the first half when a well struck shot from the edge of the box managed to find it’s way through the crowded area giving Sutton the lead. The Jags reacted well with some quick counter attacking but found it tough to break to a determined Sutton side who defended well in numbers.
The second half have saw the Jags in the ascendancy with the advantage of the sloping pitch and despite greater possession conceded another from a well worked corner. The Jags pulled one back with 5 minutes left on the clock from a corner of their own when Man of the match Euan Aston smashed a half clearance back into the home sides net. A flurry of counter attacks followed but again the Jags found it hard to penetrate Suttons’ back line. Highlights were the debuts of Max Goodier and Josh Hill along with Brandon Garrett who worked tirelessly for the side without reward and the usual outstanding display ‘between the sticks’ from Josh Price. Plenty more to come when this seasons squad with several new additions settles down and gets used to playing together. Sunday will see the Jags on the road again with a visit to Boldmere SS.
