After 6 weeks without a game Wyrley progressed comfortably into the Quarter Final of the Staffs Challenge Cup on Saturday. Wyrley started the game at a very high tempo and were unlucky not to take the lead in the first couple of minutes. Dan Kalinski pulled the ball back from the touchline and when Jamie Fowler turned it goalwards the ball appeared to cross the line before being cleared but the referee deemed otherwise. Wyrley continued to press and got the opening goal after ten minutes. Lee Charles crossed from the right and found Jamie Fowler who controlled well before firing home left footed from 12 yards.

On 25 minutes Wyrley extended the lead through Chris Geldart. Jamie Fowler clipped a ball in to Geldart who advanced into the penalty area and slotted home coolly. Lee Charles then put Wyrley 3-0 up with a penalty shortly before half time after Stuart Foster had been dragged down.

The second half began the same way the first had finished with Wyrley creating all the chances and when Danny Dolman slid through a measured pass for Lee Charles to fire home his second the game was as good as won. The pressure continued though and after 70 minutes Geldart was unlucky not to add his second of the game. Lee Charles drilled a cross to the far post and Geldart brilliantly scissor kicked an effort goalwards only to see it smash off the bar and away to safety.

Longton fired into life in the final ten minutes and after Richard James made one excellent save they managed to pull one back after a goalmouth scramble. Dan Martin was needlessly booked in the final minutes for dissent before Longton grabbed another consolation goal shortly before the final whistle. Wyrley’s reward for this impressive win is an away tie against Stone Old Alleynians in the Quarter Final.

Wyrley are in action on Tuesday night at Walsall Wood in the J W Hunt Cup and the next two league fixtures are away against Penkridge Town and Heath Town Rangers before the top of the table clash against Black Country Rangers at the Red Lion Ground.
