Stone Old Alleynians 0-0 Wyrley Juniors

Wyrley continued their promotion push on Wednesday night with a hard fought draw away to Stone Old Alleynians.

After 3 minutes Wyrley should have taken the lead when John Littler’s pass was flicked on by Steve Jones into the path of Shaun Charles and as Charles was about to pull the trigger the Stone defender tripped him from behind. The referee pointed to the spot but somehow failed to dismiss the Stone player and instead only showed him the yellow card. Chris Geldart stepped up to take the penalty but the Stone keeper guessed right and made an excellent save. Wyrley continued to push and had another chance to take the lead on 25 minutes when a glorious pass from Geldart found Jimmy Moore in space inside the box but unfortunately Moore could only find the side netting with a fierce strike. Shaun Charles tried his luck from 25 yards on 40 minutes but his shot went straight at the Stone keeper before Steve Jones had a strike from the edge of the box that had the same result.

Right on the stroke of half time Stone had their first meaningful attack. A through ball split the Wyrley defence and sent the Stone striker through one on one with Richard James in the Wyrley goal. James managed to make himself as big possible and made an excellent point blank save to keep the score goalless at the interval.

Wyrley were forced into a half time substitution with John Littler being replaced by Jamie Fowler however they still started the second half the brighter and they nearly took the lead on 55 minutes in bizarre fashion. Jimmy Moore put the Stone full back under pressure and as he tried to play it back to the keeper he looped the ball high towards the top corner but luckily the keeper managed to scramble back and prevent an own goal with a save on the line.

Wyrley were forced into another change on the hour mark when Chris Geldart was caught by a horrible challenge. Geldart had turned inside the centre circle before the Stone midfielder went right over the top of the ball and caught Geldart just below the knee. Amazingly the referee again failed to show the red card and only cautioned the player. In the closing stages Steve Jones sent a right foot volley straight at the Stone keeper before James was called into action in the Wyrley goal, again saving well with his feet

A well earned draw for Wyrley who face league leaders Black Country Rangers on Saturday before entertaining Ettingshall Park Farm at The Red Lion Ground on 20th February.
