Lions made an excellent start to their 09/10 season with a 6 – 2 win over Beacon Stars. Summer training all came together with some excellent team play, good passing skills and some excellent individual runs and determination.
Beacon Stars played well, but Lions seemed to want the win a little more. Liam J began the scoring just 5 minutes in then getting his 2nd just 3 minutes later with 2 great goals. Jim got himself on the score sheet to take Lions 3 nil up. Beacon Stars then got a breakaway scoring their 1st with the half time score ending at 3 – 1 to Lions.
Lions began the second half just as strong, with Liam J making a great run to get his hat-trick and Lions 4th goal. Beacon Stars fought back, and again got through Lions defence to score their 2nd. Lions regained their shape, fought in midfield, with Shy twisting and turning through helpless defenders to shoot the ball in the net to get Lions 5th goal. Brandon had a great run down the side lines and passed some great balls into the goal mouth area. Luke O had some great chances and went inches over the cross bar on a number of occasions. Luke D also hit the post from about 8 yards out. It was only a matter of time before Jim connected with an excellent Brandon cross to fire home Lions 6th goal of the match.
A really pleasing start to the season. Lions still have alot to learn and will definately get stronger as they build their experience as a team taking in all the new rules for the 11-a-side games. Beacon Stars played well and never gave up throughout the match. Good luck to them for the rest of the season.
Keep up the good work and keep working as a team Lions.
All the players had a really good game, it was difficult for the parents to pick a man of the match. It was decided to award Shy man of the match, mainly for his strength throughout the game in midfield, his positive attitude and determination to win the ball. Well done Shy.Sports Illustrated: Swimsuit 2007
