On reflection a fair result in a hard fought, good spirited game played in perfect weather conditions.
Cannock shaded the early exchanges but as the Lions got a foothold in the game we created a couple of half chances for Ben Smallman & Sam. The latter making a very worthwhile debut on the left hand side. A ball punted forward caused hestitancy in Cannock penalty area then like a gazelle up jumped Josh “Doof” Bellingham ala Maradona’s infamous Hand of God GOAL but this time it was legitimate without the use of a Hand. – 1-0 to the Lions. The game ebbed a flowed until a minute before half time when Luke Chidlow inexplicably handled a cross from the left – PENALTY to Cannock. This was well dispatched into the bottom left hand corner. 1-1 which it remained until half time.
The second half continued in the same vain as the 1st mainly battled out in the midfield area where Ben Smallman proved to be Man of the Match. Cannock did use their Rory Delap throw in specialist but Liam”The Horse” Dawkins & Luke “Tubs” Fletcher ably assisted by Smalley won every header & “second ball”. Lions after a flowing breakaway did have a great chance to win the game but Luke Russell was denied by a superb save by Cannock’s keeper.
All in all though a draw was a fair result & Wyrley should take credit for a very good team performance. Let’s hope we can continue this sprit & effort until the end of the season.
