King George V Casuals 5 v 4 Wyrley Juniors

Wyrley got off to their usual losing start to the season in a high scoring encounter at Aston University.

New to the league, George V were pumped up & dominated early proceedings playing some quality balls into the channels and supporting the lone striker well. They deservedly took the lead after 10 minutes but Wyrley quickly hit back with a fantastic solo effort from Matt Moseley who cut in from the left and curled the ball beyond the keeper high into the right hand corner of the net.

There were debuts for Wayne Ashfield at centre half & then for Sean Bevan, who came on at right back for the unfortunate Jay Brown, who pulled a hamstring.

George V scored twice more in the first half, firstly after Ashley Gunn inadvertently flicked the ball on to the centre forward to tap in & then from a corner just before half time to make the score 3-1.

The next goal was crucial and it came for Wyrley. The ball broke at the edge of the box for Luke Shail who thundered the ball high into the roof of the net. George V then hit 2 goals in quick succession to make the score 5-2 as Wyrley were losing the physical battle although continuing to play the better football.

The introduction of Haydn Nash & Tom Kneller reaped quick results with them both being involved heavily in the Wyrley fightback. Haydn began to give the right back a torrid time but it was Kneller who broke down the right, cut in and rolled the ball into the path of Josh Griffiths, whose first time goalbound effort was handled, resulting in a penalty being awarded. Nash took the pen but the keeper parried it into the path of the alert Kneller who finished cooly to make the score 5-3.

Josh Bradley was making his presence felt in the middle of the park & broke well from midfield before playing a reverse pass into the path of Kneller to score past the advancing keeper to set up a rousing finish. Despite having chances to equalise Wyrley just couldn’t manage it but have a chance to quickly put things right with a home game in midweek.
