Wyrley started this game strongly following last week’s disappointment and took an early lead with a calm finish by Louie Parish from a Lewis Hill pass on 5 mins. This prompted an immediate response from Cannock, a break down the left went unchecked and a super cross was volleyed home for an equaliser after just 7 mins.
A frantic period then followed with chances at both ends. The pace of Tom Wheeldon was a constant danger to Cannock, while Jack Addison had to be at his brave best to save at the feet of the onrushing forward. Utd regained the lead on 17 mins with a spectacular dipping half volley by Lewis from the edge of the area.
Wyrley were working tirelessly in midfield to keep Cannock at bay With Sam Foreman, Tom Peacock and Jake Higgins putting in a great shift and Utd then extended their lead on 22 mins from the most unlikely source, a huge goal kick from Jack caught on the breeze and bounced over the unfortunate keeper into the net….WHAT A GOAL!!! HALF TIME Utd 3 Cannock 1
The second half started with Wyrley once again on the front foot and pushed hard for what would have been the killer fourth goal. Louie Parish’s rampaging runs were causing mayhem for Cannock and one of those created a great opportunity for Chase Allen who finished expertly only to be pulled back by the linesman’s flag.
This seemed to give Cannock a lift and they started to take control as the second half wore on, pushing Utd further back and only some strong last ditch tackles from Alex Price, Elliot Crook and Damo Powell prevented Cannock mounting an earlier comeback. However, with 10 mins remaining Cannock took advantage of some hesitancy in the Wyrley back line to pull a goal back. This shook the boys and for a minute or two the equaliser seemed on the cards but captain Tom Rowlands steadied the ship at the back and Tom Wheeldon finally secured the 3 points following a goalmouth scramble with a deadly finish off the upright. With only 2 minutes remaining this settled matters, much to the relief of the nervy Utd supporters.
