After last week’s dismal display at home to Mahal our promotion hopes disappeared, now we are playing for pride and to gain as many points as possible. With 5 players away on holiday major changes were made. We started brightly and playing uphill made most of the early play. Chris Astbury seemed to be revelling in his new free role and was rewarded when following a fine cross from himself the ball was headed home by Fowler. However as often happens the most dangerous period for a team is when they have just scored. Within 40 seconds from the restart the visitors were level, a ball was not cleared out on the left when we tried to play it away, Rangers nicked it, delivered it quickly into the box and put it away.
H-T 1-1
The second half began with the wind having got stronger and blowing in the faces of Wyrley. Rangers pushed right up on us and payed some good passing football. wyrley’s defence coped though and when they eventually decided to play a bit of football a good move resulted in Astbury seizing on a mistake and advancing into the Rangers box, he easily beat the ‘keeper and put us 2-1 up. This didn’t deter Rangers and they continued to press us back. the problem was when we did get the ball we hit everything long which with the wind holding it up meant it missed out Astbury and never reached the forwards and so the ball kept coming back. Eventually Rangers pressure told and they got their equliser. They continued to press for a winner and just as the game looked to be petering out to a draw rangers got a bit of luck. Following a move up the right a cross was judged to be handled by Lee Charles, although I thought it was ball to hand the linesman thought otherwise and up went the flag. The penalty was duly converted and Rangers went away happy.
