Wyrley Juniors 2 v 4 Winding Wheel

Wyrley suffered their first defeat in 5 as they bowed out of the League Cup at the first hurdle. Wyrley suffered pre-match set backs with Mark Whitehouse, Tom Garbett & Adam Green all unavailable.

However, Wyrley started brightly with some confident, flowing football with Michael Clayton and Matt Moseley heavily involved. Winding Wheel continually fouled to break up the play and after one such foul, Nigel Crook drove in a free kick, from which Matt Moseley rose high only to head against the bar.

Winding Wheel took the lead with a well hit shot from 25 yards which gave Pollard no chance – our weakness of not tracking back being our downfall. A major turning point in the game came when Liam Faherty was brought down clinically in the area and the ref had no hesitation in awarding the spot kick. Liam picked himself up to take the kick but surprisingly hit the ball wide of the right hand post.

Nige Crook then lost the ball in centre midfield and Wyrley were punished heavily as Wheel broke quickly down the right and crossed low for the centre forward to turn the ball in. Half-Time 0-2.

Like the first half, Wyrley started the second brightly with plenty of possession but only long range efforts. After going 3 down, Matt Moseley pulled a goal back with a super left foot effort after cutting in from the wing that went low past the keeper. Immediately though Wheel scored their 4th.

Wyrley got back to 4-2 when Crook scored from an Andy Clayton free kick, that was flicked on, and Crook brought it down, with a helping hand, to advance and calmly roll the ball past the keeper.

Wyrley forced a series of corners and free kicks but could not pull back the lead. Graham Pollard had a good game in goal, Paul Durbin, Jeff Wright and the rest of the defence were solid. The big problem is off the ball work rate, particularly from midfield. Going forward we are probably one of the best in the league, if not thee best.

Wyrley hope to get back to winning ways against CK Prairie, away, in the league next week.

Team: 4-4-2
Pollard, Durbin, Wright, Garrington, Clayton (A), Faherty, Crook, Clayton (M), Moseley, Higgs, Arnold (Burkett).
Subs: Burkett.
