Wyrley welcomed back Danny Dolman and Paul Yeomans to the starting line up and bounced back to winning ways on Saturday with a hard fought victory over Bentley FC.
Wyrley started the game very brightly and took the lead in the 15th minute when Dolman found Chris Geldart with a through ball and the striker held his nerve to slot home past the advancing keeper. 5 minutes later both Geldart and Dolman managed to break through the Bentley offside trap and with the keeper advancing towards Geldart he unselfishly squared for Dolman to roll into an empty net.
Bentley started to push back at Wyrley then and managed to get back into the game from a corner on 30 minutes. The corner was swung in from the right hand side and some shocking marking by Wyrley allowed Richard Finch a free header from 6 yards to reduce the deficit. Almost straight from the restart Wyrley again extended their lead when Lee Charles found Dolman in space inside the area and he fired a low shot into the bottom corner to give Wyrley some breathing space. Bentley were not going to give up though and after 42 minutes Finch applied a cute finish to get Bentley back within a goal after Wyrley has failed to deal with a long ball. A minute later and the scores were level as Finch completed his hat-trick. A corner from Bentley was only half cleared and as the Wyrley defence pushed out a through ball found Finch who lobbed Richard James in the Wyrley goal from 20 yards. Half time 3-3.
Bentley were by far the better side at the start of the second half and they deservedly took the lead after 55 minutes. Wyrley again failed to cope with Bentley’s direct approach and when the loose ball was picked up by Lewis Nickle he made no mistake from 18 yards with a lovely curling finish. Richard James then came to Wyrley’s rescue twice in a space of minutes with two excellent saves. Firstly he saved bravely in a one on one situation before brilliantly tipping a free kick from Nickle on to the bar.
Wyrley applied a lot of pressure as the game progressed but found it very hard to break through the resilient Bentley defence before Danny Dolman completed his hat-trick on 85 minutes. Lee Charles delivered the ball from the right and it landed at Dolman’s feet 8 yards out and he slotted the ball neatly into the bottom corner much to the relief of the Wyrley bench.
A draw would probably have been a fair result but on 87 minutes Dolman added his fourth of the game to pinch the points for Wyrley. Lee Charles again did well on the right before beating the full back and cutting in towards goal. With the Bentley keeper advancing towards him Charles then pulled the ball back towards Dolman who made no mistake from 6 yards. Although there was four minutes of injury time added Bentley failed to create any chances to get the equaliser and a minute from time Richard Finch completed an eventful game by adding a sending off to his hat-trick for dissent.
Wyrley now have a break from league action and will face Longton Harriers in the Staffs Challenge Cup next Saturday at the Red Lion Ground, 1:30 kick off.
