With a bare squad of 11, (2 of which were keepers) Wyrley travelled to Rugeley looking to turn around recent results. The 1st turnaround was both teams returning to Wyrley to play the game.
Wyrley showed their intent straight from kick off and were rewarded with a goal for Leanne, when she rounded the keeper and sent the ball into an empty net 0-1. 8 mins Leanne slotted the ball through the defence and Kelly I hit a sweet drive into the back of the net 0-2. 15 mins Emily sent Leanne on her way to notch up her 2nd 0-3. The defence of Jody, Kirsty, Lauren and Charlie all played really well and stopped most of Rugeleys attacks in there tracks. Lauren was outstanding with her tackles, blocks and passes, (maybe she will play out more often). Midfielders Sam, Emily, Tash and Kelly I played well and held their shape well. Sophie and Leanne made the Rugeley defenders work hard, while Nia was left relatively untroubled in goal.
The 2nd half Wyrley seemed content to settle for the 3 they had and were punished in the 60th min, with a defensive mix up leaving Nia no chance 1-3. Nia made a tremendous save to deny Rugely a 2nd. This woke Wyrley up and 68mins Leanne got her hat trick when she smashed her shot past the keeper 1-4. 70 mins a penalty was awarded to Wyrley, Sophie stepped up but the shot was saved by the Rugeley keeper. 71 mins Penalty was the shout from the Rugeley players when 2 of their defenders tackled each other in their own box, which left everyone as amused by this shout as were bemused by the previous one. 77 mins Sam battled down the right wing, swung in a cross for Sophie to slide past the keeper 1-5. The points now looking secure the game lost its momentum and Rugeley found themselves in front of an open goal and had obviously been watching the way Wyrley had been hitting over the bar and did the same. 90 mins Leanne was the 1st to the ball and grabbed her 4th 1-6.
A better game this week played in a jovial spirit by both teams, well played Wyrley.
