Tamworth turned up to defy the heat and with only 9 players took Wyrley on. They battled and chased down the ball, but were defeated by one of the best passing games of football that Wyrley have produced over the last few weeks. Lauren was relatively untroubled during the 1st half and only had a few long range shots to stop. Jody, Ash, Cath and Sam were playing in an 8 man midfield with Kelly I, Tash, Emily and Kelly H for a majority of the game. Sophie and Leanne were given a bountiful supply of golden opportunities, many of which were taken. 7 mins a nice 1-2 between Sophie and Kelly H opened the scoring with Kelly H’s right footed shot 1-0. 13 mins, with some nice build up play that started in defence with Cath, and ended with Cath catching the ball just right, she was outside the box and chipped the keeper 2-0. 19 mins Tash hit a fierce left foot drive that the keeper had no chance with 3-0. 20 mins Sophie almost ran into the post getting her foot on the end of a sublime cross 4-0. 35 mins Kelly H with a cracker of a shot made it 5-0. 36 mins Emily scuffed her shot but it still managed to clear the keeper hit the post and turn in 6-0. (Emily had a quality goal yesterday so we are under playing today’s effort).
Emily and Kelly I were replaced by Charlie and Chelsea for the 2nd half. Wyrley continued their free flowing game and were a joy to watch. 50 mins a fine move set Kelly on her way down the wing, she cut the ball across and Leanne slotted it forward for Sophie to round the keeper and bury her shot 7-0. 52 mins Tamworth eventually get their shot right and net in the top corner 7-1. 85 mins Tash set up Sophie for her hat trick, when Sophie’s shot was almost saved by the keeper’s outstretched hand 8-1. 87 mins Sam took a corner which was cleared only as far as Tash who lashed the ball through everybody in the box and into the net 9-1.
Martin would like to thank everybody who has contributed to the team this season, 19 players have played their part in achieving 4th spot in a very competitive league. This team has reached the semi-final of the Staffs Challenge Cup and the final of the League Cup. It has been a long season and must be considered a successful one as it is the first season at this level for any of these girls, and the first season in adult football for several players. Here’s hoping for the same or better next season.
Special thanks to Neil Hancox who has been the referee at the majority of our home fixtures for both the ladies and under 18’s this season.
