Wyrley started the game missing 5 first team players Stuart Foster, Steve Foster, Jimmy Moore, Adam Jinks and Steve McMahon and their 100% record was comfortably ended by Wem Town.
Wem started the game very brightly and immediately put Wyrley under a lot of pressure with their direct and physical approach and it was not long before they took the lead. A long ball into the box was flicked on to the Wem striker who was unmarked at the far post and he gave Richard James no chance with a fierce strike from close range. Wem continued to apply the pressure and only some excellent goalkeeping from James kept the score respectable.
With 15 minutes remaining of the first half Wyrley finally burst into life and they were unlucky not to get an equaliser. First Danny Dolman tried his luck from 25 yards only to see the Wem keeper tip his effort onto the bar before Lee Charles met a deep cross with a volley at the back post that again rebounded to safety off the woodwork.
Wyrley began the second half how they had finished the first and within 5 minutes they were level. Some neat football down the right hand side resulted in a lovely through ball by Lee Charles and Danny Dolman thumped the ball home off the underside of the crossbar. Wyrley then went close on a couple of occasions before they lost Jamie Fowler and Danny Dolman to injury.
This seemed to spur Wem on and after 60 minutes they regained the lead when Lee Charles attempted to block and shot and the deflection was enough to take the ball past James’s despairing dive. 10 minutes later and the points were effectively wrapped up when substitute Kris Chilton was harshly adjudged to have tripped a Wem player inside the box and the penalty was coolly converted.
In an attempt to get back in the game Wyrley reverted to 4-3-3 and although they applied some pressure they failed to create any clear cut opportunities before they were hit on the counter attack 5 minutes from time and conceded a fourth. Wem broke down the right hand side and when a cross into the box evaded everyone the unmarked Wem winger had the simple task of firing home from close range at the far post.
Wem thoroughly deserved the 3 points and Wyrley must now put things right on the training ground before Darlaston Town Reserves visit The Red Lion Ground next Saturday.
