Wyrley Juniors 2-1 Ettingshall Park Farm

After beating top of the league Black Country last week Wyrley entertained bottom side Ettingshall Park Farm on Saturday and were made to work equally as hard to get the 3 points.

Wyrley started the game at a high tempo and put Ettingshall under a lot of pressure early on before they deservedly took the lead after 15 minutes. John Littler took a throw in on the left hand side and threw the ball in to Steve Jones who cleverly allowed the ball to run through for Chris Fowler. Fowler continued into the box, waited for the keeper to commit and slipped the ball the other side of him and into the net.

That goal fired Ettingshall in to action and on 25 minutes they pulled themselves level. A long free kick was flicked on and Ettingshall’s winger reacted first to slip their striker through on goal and although Richard James managed to get both hands to the shot it had enough power to end up in the net.

Leading up to half time Jimmy Moore was unlucky with a couple of efforts from the edge of the 18 yard box. The first was a lovely curling effort that was just too high and the second was a fierce shot that unfortunately went straight at the Ettingshall keeper and the half time score remained level.

Wyrley started the second half brightly but although they were seeing a lot of the ball they were finding it difficult to break through the resilient Ettingshall defence. The break through came after 65 minutes through Chris Geldart. Steve Foster delivered a great cross from the right and Geldart tried to flick it on to the waiting Steve Jones at the far post. Geldart did not get enough on the flick and the ball hit the Ettingshall defender then bounced back into Geldart’s path and he made no mistake with a first time shot from 8 yards.

Wyrley continued to dominate possession and substitute Jamie Fowler nearly put the game beyond doubt after 80 minutes when he outpaced the Ettingshall defence and forced the keeper into a fine save.

This result took Wyrley to within 2 points of the league summit with 6 games remaining and keeps them in line for promotion. Wyrley are at The Red Lion Ground on Saturday against Malvern Rangers before travelling to third place Wem on the 3rd of April.
