Wyrley Juniors Dragons 5 v 4 FC Bloxwich Colts

With Bloxwich sitting joint top of Division 1 and Dragons second from bottom, today’s game looked as if it would be a real test for the boys today.

As the game kicked off Dragons looked to score quickly, charging down the field with Cieran W making Bloxwichs’ goalie make a fine save. As the minutes ticked by Dragons pushed forward with efforts from Liam R and Kieran S going just wide. Bloxwich soon settled down into their game though and started to dominate the match and as quick as Dragons had started the game it had turned around and with Bloxwich scoring the first goal breaking through the midfield and defence with apparent ease.

Dragons were now at sixes and sevens as Bloxwich just battered our defence with wave after wave of attack and as soon as they had scored their second goal it looked like it would be a long game for the Dragons. The lads continues to work hard though with Carl and Ewan trying hard to win the ball in midfield and feed it out wide to Tom H and Cieran W, they eventually forced a corner which was well taken by Kieran S only for Tom F to head just wide and from that moment on something happened, Dragons started to believe in themselves as a team and once again started to take the game to Bloxwich. First to score was Liam R which was the signal for Dragons to push harder and as they put Bloxwich under pressure during one such attack the ball broke free in the six yard box bouncing around the area and it was Cieran W who scored with a typical poacher’s goal to draw the score level.

Bloxwich came back at Dragons on the break with Nathan having to make a couple of good saves to stop Bloxwich from once again taking the lead. But it was Dragons who would go into half time with the lead. Tom H and Kieran S were playing the ball neatly around Bloxwichs’ defence causing them to give away a free kick just five yards outside the box which when took Kieran S looped above both Bloxwichs’ defence and keeper to score.

Half Time 3 – 2.

Dragons came out in the second half full of confidence and battled away hard to build on their lead. Tom F, Liam H, Brandon and Dom worked hard to make sure Bloxwich didn’t have it easy in front of goal whilst Carl and Ewan once again battled to control the centre of midfield and it was this work ethic that brought on Dragons fourth goal, Carl won the ball in midfield sending it out wide and it was Ewan who burst forward to get onto the cross and slot it into the goal.

Bloxwich tried hard to get back into the game and always looked dangerous on the break scoring once more to make it 4 – 3. Nerves set in amongst the parents at this point but Dragons just carried on working hard as they had previously done and with Kieran S scoring his second of the game it looked like Dragons would walk away the winners. Bloxwich had other ideas and came back at Dragons with everything but the kitchen sink making Nathan pull off some excellent saves. Bloxwich did manage to score once more but it was too little too late as the final whistle went and Dragons came out the victors after a fantastic game in which both teams played some excellent football.
