Result – Wanderers 7 – Tigers 1;
Following last weeks great performance and result against Great Barr, Wanderers welcomed Wyrley Tigers to Willenhall Academy for the first all Wyrley clash of the season.
Match Report –
So after last weeks good performance we decided to continue with the same starting team and formation. It had worked well against Great Barr, and we know Tigers are probably one of the teams that are going to be at the top of the division so we wanted to make sure the boys continued where we left off and were focused on what could be a tough game.
We started the first half brightly, keeping the ball on the ground and controlling the game from the very beginning. In the early spell we were getting joy down both flanks with Josh and Liam dominating the full backs. Lewis and Jack were getting involved in a lot of our good play. 10 mins in and we thought we had the lead when Liam was played through by Lewis and the covering defender pushing the ball past the keeper, only to see the ref rule it out for a slight push by Liam. We continued to have the majority of the play and it wasn’t long before we were 1 up. Great work by Liam saw him beat several players to get to the byline and cut the ball back for Jack to finish sharply in off of the post, 1-0 Wanderers. We should have used this as a chance to kill the game off early, but unfortunately a debatable offside decision gave Tigers a free just on halfway. The long free kick was missed by a couple of our defenders and found its way through to the Tigers striker who rifled a first time shot past Tom. 1-1! This definitely took us by surprise and so we had to start again. Credit to the boys, they just picked up where they had left off controlling possession and pushing forwarded. Within 5mins we were back in front. Some neat play from Cal and Jack played Josh through on goal, who then calmly finished into the bottom corner to make it 2-1. We were now definitely on top, and it wasn’t long before we had our third. Pretty much a replica of the second, this time a good challenge/ball from Jakey found Jack who slide Josh through one-on-one. This time Josh’s initial shot cannoned off of the post, but thankfully Josh followed up to grab his second and make it 3-1. It was now all us and before the half time break we could of easily had a couple more goals, in particular following some good work out wide by Josh he found Lewis on his own 10 yards out, but unfortunately his first time shot was straight at the Tigers keeper. 3-1 at half-time!
We made some changes at half time, but kept our formation and agreed we needed to keep the intensity and concentration to ensure grabbed the next goal. We didn’t want to give the Tigers any encouragement so it was important to finish the game off early in the second half. We decided to push Josh more central, and drop Jack slightly deeper. Alfie then came on down the right.
We started a little slow from the kick off and were nearly caught out within a few minutes. Some good work by the Tigers winger down our left produced a great cross to the back post, but their striker couldn’t force the ball home. This spurred us into life, and within 5mins we had extended our lead. Again good work in the midfield found Josh who raced through to calmly finish and make it 4-1. This goal seemed to kick us into another gear and within another 5mins it was 5! This time great work by Jack saw his shot blocked only for Josh to follow up and finish (left footed!) to grab his 4th and our 5th goal.
A couple more changes for us, saw Kaya and Ethan join the attack and within a few minutes saw Kaya grab his first goal for the Wanderers. Some nice football found him through with only the keeper to beat, which he did calmly 6-1. We dominated the final 15mins and created several more chances, and our 7th and final goal came in the final stages. Again good work down our right feed Kaya in again, he powered through to drive the ball home for his second. 7-1!
A fantastic performance from everyone today, we played some great football and scored some great goals. As it was last week there were a lot of good individual performances today. Another goal for Jack, plus some assists, 2 goals for Kaya, his first goals for the team so well done Kaya….(maybe could of grabbed that hat-trick too!) 🙂 Also some great performances from Callum and Owen in the middle of the park and again some solid no nonsense defending from Jakey at the back. So it was a tough call for our “Man of the Match” this week, but I guess when you score 4 goals it makes it a little easier! Our “MoM” this weeks goes to Josh Lees, Well done Josh, back amongst the goals!
Well done to everyone today and thank you to the supporters/parents on the sideline. Great turnout to watch probably one the best performances of the season! Well done lads let’s keep the momentum going, lets train hard this week and look forward to our cup match against Lane Head Warriers next Sunday.
