Kidsgrove 1-4 Wyrley Ladies

On a glorious Sunday Afternoon, Wyrley set off up the M6 to Kidsgrove, to the team who knocked them out of last year’s Staffs Cup in the semi final stage. Wyrley started brightly enough passing the ball and probing the Kidsgrove defence. 17 mins Hayley sent over a super cross from the right and after a bit of ping pong round the box Leanne smashed it home 0-1. Kidsgrove went straight on to the attack and a truly magnificent diving save from Lauren, tipping the ball away for a corner, from a long range dipping shot kept Wyrley ahead. Lauren was once again the saviour a few minutes later commanding her box well and saving at the feet of the on rushing forward. Two excellent saves Lauren. 31 mins Leanne made a surging run up the left wing, and cut a beauty of a cross for Sophie to connect with and make it 0-2. 35 mins Depending on which version you believe, it was either a testing cross from Hayley which the keeper only managed to palm into her net, or Hayley smashed it from the right lobbing the keeper for a 0-3 lead. The rest of the half was an evenly matched battle across the pitch. Jody, Kelly W, Ash and Cath defended with a high line and dealt with the runners well. Tash, Leanne, Emily and Hayley worked well in midfield and kept Sophie and Jemma busy with some lovely passes to run on to.
With the temperature nearing 20*c the heat was going to play its part in the 2nd half, with both sides finding it difficult to chase the long balls and settling for a game mainly played in the middle of the pitch. Shelly came on for Emily and Leah replaced Hayley. Leah battled well against a stronger opponent and used her size well to come away with the ball on several occasions. 75 mins Wyrley were caught napping and left 1 on 1 with Lauren, who was helpless to keep out the cracking shot 1-3. This gave Kidsgrove the momentum and came close to securing a second, only to be thwarted by the post. This jump started Wyrley and once again started to pass and build. Kidsgrove battled and continued to seek out a 2nd goal. 90 mins when Ash curled in a sublime cross for Sophie to stick a leg out at and turn into the net 1-4. A hard game given the heat, but Wyrley continue a fine run of 5 wins in the league and 2nd place in the table.
Well done girls keep up the great work, we are all really pleased with the results and work rate this season.
