Dragons welcomed Wednesfield Youth today down at West Bentley.
Before the kick off a minutes silence was held in memory of Liam Keeling to which both sets parents and players respected impeccably.
Once the game kicked off both teams were struggling in the blustery conditions but with Wednesfield only fielding ten players and Dragons having the wind behind them it wasn’t long before the team settled in. With Dragons starting to get the ball down and pass, there was a good build up right from the defence which sent Liam R through who easily beat his marker to slot the ball past the keeper after 6 minutes.
Dragons continued to dominate the first with Wednesfield only managing a couple good chances on Nathans’ goal but it took until 20 minutes before Kieran S scored the second goal. Ryan picked up the ball on the left passing through to Tom H who sent Kieran S on his way hitting the ball past the keeper from just inside the 18 yard box.
More efforts on goal came from Cieran W who forced the Wednesfield keeper into making a good save and from Tom F who hit the ball just wide after the ball was knocked out of the box from a corner but it was Carl who scored Dragons third and final goal Nathan kicked the ball high, taking full advantage of the strong wind blowing, sending the ball over everybody and with Carl reacting quickest to get the ball and score. Kieran S couldn’t carry on after over stretching to collect a pass, tweaking a muscle in the process.
Half Time 3 – 0.
With both teams now fielding ten players each and the wind in Wednesfields favour, you could see that it would be a tough 30 minutes for Dragons.
Wednesfield battled hard in the second half attacking Dragons defence with every opportunity and Dom, Brandon, Tom F and Moggy were made to work. The pressure and conditions eventually told and Wednesfield took full advantage scoring a good goal to pull one back.
Although that fired the away team up Dragons never let their heads drop even after Wednesfield got themselves right back into the game after scoring once again, this time from a well taken free kick which crashed in off the crossbar.
Dragons held on comfortably for the last 10 minutes to earn their first victory in Division 1.
