The 1 minute silence held for Liam Keeling was impeccably observed by all 4 teams present at Harrisons Football ground on this blustery Sunday afternoon.
Willenhall turned up for this match with only 10 players but as they were unbeaten this season this was not looked on as an advantage to wyrley. On 2 mins Sam collected the ball rounded a defender and slotted the ball past the keeper 1-0. Willenhall then played a very high line and Wyrley were caught off-side on numerous occasions, Leanne was caught off-side with 1 foot in their half. 20mins of sustained pressure paid off with a wyrley corner which wind assisted went in from Vikki 2-0. Wyrley had several attempts on goal which were either saved, cleared, put wide or over the bar. On 40mins Vikki collected a ball from Jody went on a solo run and chipped the keeper 3-0.
2nd half started with willenhall pressing to get on the score sheet, but Kirsty, Jody, Ash and Cathy held on valiantly till the 55mins, when their very fast number 9 managed to chip Lauren 3-1. 65mins it was again number 9 who raced through and smashed it past the stranded Lauren3-2. Tash moved into defence to try and help stop the striker but on 70mins and yet again she got clear and found her way past Lauren 3-3. The inevitable seemed to be happening, rueing the missed chances to finish the game in the 1st half. Jody moved up to join Sam, Kelly and Leanne in midfield to keep the ball from being sent through, this seemed to work and Jody sent a few balls over for Leanne to chase. Chelsea and Rachel came on for Sam and Sophie who tried valiantly to score all game. Charlie came on for Vikki, who had chased the ball every time it came through. 75mins Kelly raced through beating the defender with a burst of speed and buries it past the keeper 4-3. A crunching tackle by Tash who clearly got the ball, had willenhall screaming for a red card but the referee who was on the spot (and appointed by willenhall) said clear intent was for the ball. 80mins a lovely over the top ball from Jody was collected by Leanne who rounded the keeper and sent the ball dribbling goal wards, resulting in 2 defenders and 1 keeper and the ball in the net 5-3. Time to lock up shop and try and hang on for the win.
Well done girls, Jody Tash and Kelly special mentions from Martin Millard for extra effort in a very hard game.
