STAFFS COUNTY WOMENS LEAGUE CHAMPIONS 2008/9
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles move
Final game of the season saw possibly the 2 best teams in the league compete against each other for the 3rd time this season with each team on 1 win each. Wyrley won in the Staffs Cup and Stafford won at home in the league.
The first half got off to a great start for Wyrley with Leanne Mitchell the league’s top scorer getting her hat trick before half time with 3 superbly taken goals. Then Kelly Highman got in on the act with another great goal slotted into the top corner of the net just as her dad was getting something from the car (quality goal Paul). Wyrley where cruising it 4-0 at half time and the game looked over. However Stafford had other thoughts and after a couple of mistakes by Wyrley Stafford had scored 2 quick goals. Wyrley then made it 5-2 with a great strike on her left foot by Tash just outside the area. The game looked over and yet again Stafford changed tactics and moved their captain wide on the left wing and Wyrley where caught out again by another 2 quick goals, 5-4 now, yet again Wyrley scored their 6th goal when Mary Chandler latched on to a ball on the right wing and volleyed it straight into the far corner of the net to make it 6-4 and i never thought at this point Stafford would get back but they did and scored their last 2 goals with a minute of the 8 minutes of extra time that the ref gave, not sure where all the extra time came from? However 98
goals this season 39 for Leanne and no one could catch us even on goal difference.
However 6-6 the final score, a credit to Stafford for coming back from 4-0 at half time chasing that 2nd spot in the league, what an achievement for the players of this team – league winner at u17s in the Central Warwickshire Premier League on a Saturday for most of the team and also as Ladies Staffs County League Winners on a Sunday. This team can certainly go places. Steve & Martin would like to thank the players for putting on a tremendous team performance in every position from goalkeeper, defenders, midfielders and forwards this season. We have been proud to Manage and watch the team and also to Martin Whitehouse and Andy Richards for the training, a big thanks to Andy for running the line and also the Parents for their support home and away.
Well done to proud Team Captain Kelly Isaac’s and her Team.
