Wyrley Juniors 4-2 Mahal

Wyrley’s preparations were thrown into jeopardy 15 minutes before kick off when leading scorer Steve McMahon pulled up in the warm up with a recurrence of his groin strain. Chris Fowler was then promoted to the starting line up and had an excellent game as Wyrley continued their 100% record. Despite the setback and after a sluggish start last week Wyrley came out firing on all cylinders and dominated the first half. Chris Fowler and Paul Yeomans won everything in the middle of the park and strikers Danny Dolman and Thomas Lowe were constantly putting the Mahal defence under pressure.

After 25 minutes Wyrley broke the deadlock. Thomas Lowe picked up the ball 30 yards from goal and went on a mazy run before slotting home from 15 yards. The pressure did not stop there and Wyrley kept creating chances before they managed to double their lead after 35 minutes. Lee Charles provided an excellent delivery from a corner and Chris Fowler rose at the far post to thump a header past the Mahal keeper.

Wyrley then set about getting the game finished before half time and got their reward after 40 minutes when another excellent corner, this time from John Littler, was met by Danny Dolman and Wyrley went in at the break 3-0 up with the points practically in the bag.

Mahal started the second half with a lot more purpose and managed to get themselves back in the game after 60 minutes when Dan Martin tripped their striker inside the box and a penalty was rightly awarded. Craig Fillingham deputising for Richard James in the Wyrley goal was sent the wrong way by the penalty taker and Mahal had a lifeline.

Lowe then made sure of the points for Wyrley in the 70th minute when he latched on to a through ball before showing great skill in rounding the Mahal keeper and slotting home a tidy right footed finish from an acute angle. Mahal did manage to get another consolation goal 10 minutes from time when a snap shot from 30 yards flew past Fillingham into the bottom corner but the points were never really in danger after the excellent first half performance.
