Walsall Wood 4-1 Wyrley Juniors

Wyrley crashed out of the J W Hunt Cup 4-1 on Tuesday night against Walsall Wood who play two leagues higher in the Midland Combination Premier.

Walsall Wood got off to an ideal start scoring after just two minutes when slack marking from a corner allowed their defender to head home from close range. Ten minutes later it was 2-0 when the Walsall Wood left winger did well getting to the touchline before pulling back the ball to an unmarked player to roll home from 6 yards.

Wyrley created their first chance after 25 minutes when a through ball from Danny Dolman set Shaun Charles away but unfortunately the Walsall Wood defender got back just in time to put in an important block as Charles shot. Five minutes later Wyrley nearly scored again when a cross from Steve Foster evaded everyone and skimmed the wrong side of the far post.

Just as it looked like Wyrley were about to get back in to the game they were dealt a cruel sucker punch. With Dan Kalinski down on the floor with a head injury, Dan Martin attempted to clear the ball out of play so he could get treated. A Walsall Wood player kept the ball from going out and delivered a cross that was tucked away by the centre forward for 3-0. Then right on the stroke of half time Wood added their fourth goal when Phil Bowater tried to block a cross and unfortunately only succeeded in deflecting the ball past a helpless Richard James in the Wyrley goal. Half time 4-0.

Wyrley came out for the second half with a much better attitude and were unlucky not to get a goal back when Chris Geldart cut in from the left but he could only fire straight at the keeper from the edge of the area. Then on 65 minutes Mark Brindley went close with a strike from the corner of the box that went narrowly wide.

On 70 minutes Wyrley did get a goal back when Chris Geldart found space in the area and as he was about to shoot he was pulled back by a Walsall Wood player. The referee awarded a penalty and Geldart got back to his feet to send the keeper the wrong way from the spot. Wyrley continued to apply pressure during the remainder of the game but unfortunately it was too little too late. Nevertheless it was again a spirited second half performance from Wyrley against a strong Walsall Wood side and who knows what the outcome could have been had we not shown them too much respect early in the game.

Wyrley’s league game against Stone Old Alleynians has been cancelled this week so the next action will be at the Red Lion Ground against Malvern Rangers on Saturday 27th February.
