WYRLEY JUNIORS FC 2 – 1 HEATH TOWN RANGERS

Wyrley kicked off the 2009/10 season with a well deserved victory this Saturday. Armed with a host of new faces it took Wyrley 20 minutes to dust off the cobwebs at which point they already found themselves 1-0 down. Goalkeeper Richard James, returning to the club after a season away, threw the ball out to left back Dan Martin who found himself isolated and was subsequently robbed of possession. The Heath Town player crossed the ball into the penalty area and after a goalmouth scramble the ball was poked into Wyrley’s net. Road of No Return download

Wyrley then began to apply lots of pressure and drew level on 30 minutes when Danny Dolman collected the ball 40 yards out and spotting the Heath Town keeper off his line instinctively drilled a superb strike over him for a well deserved equaliser. Ten minutes later and Wyrley were in front. Steve McMahon, making his debut, collected the ball with his back to goal, turned, beat a player and then unleashed an unstoppable shot from 25 yards into the far corner of the net.

Wyrley went in at half time 2-1 up but were forced into a substitution at the interval with Jimmy Moore replacing the injured Jamie Fowler. This change then meant that 17 year old Steve Foster, who had started the game at right back and impressed, had to slot in at centre half alongside his brother Stuart.

Heath Town had a lot of the ball at the start of the second half without causing any real threat to Wyrley’s goal and as the game wore on it was Wyrley who created all the chances. Chris Geldart had three great chances but was denied by the Heath Town keeper each time. Then with ten minutes to go Steve McMahon had a great chance to put the game beyond doubt when he was found at the back post by Lee Charles but he could only lift his effort over the bar.

Overall it was a very solid performance from Wyrley and all the players showed a tremendous work ethic throughout resulting in a deserved 3 points.
